I'm at a crossroads right now. I'm 37 and I graduated *** laude with a 3.8 2 years ago from a Top 50 school (political science).

I've been working on a few political campaigns...and even though I enjoy it, I'm not propelling myself toward the head of the pack. I've been trying to avoid federal politics and stay locally... I've wanted to get on as staff with a public official. No luck.

It's not working, my competition tends to be 24-25...many with law degrees and all come from wealthy families.

I'm not willing to give up on politics but I'm feeling the pressure of getting older (and being single). I'm trying to convince myself to look into a Master of Homeland Security offered at Tulane University. Its not my big passion...but I tend to be civic minded, and its the one way I can develop a career possibly in public service. Anyone have experience with anything like this?

My BA in PoliSci isn't getting it done for me. I'd love to go to GWU in DC for a Masters in Political Management but no way in hell could I afford that.

I'm working on a Master of Security Studies with a concentration in Regional Studies. Sometimes, this kind of program is known as National Security Studies or International Security Studies. It's a little different from homeland security in that it's a sub-field of international relations instead of an extension of criminal justice and emergency management. I'm almost halfway done and my applications are already starting to get more attention from the federal government. It's hard getting in as a non-veteran.

The problem with most people who obtain degrees in homeland security, political science, international relations, criminal justice, etc. is that they don't have a specific goal. They just get their degrees and then start asking what they can do with them. Before you choose a degree program, you need to figure out exactly in which field you want to work and what's the best way to get there.

Not personally. But I know 2 people in Homeland Security now. They both got hired right out of college (they are ~25) and neither has a masters degree.

My son is majoring in Computer Networking and Internet Security with a minor in Cyber Security. Students from his college are hired by Homeland Security. Here's a link that shows some colleges with an Information Security major - List of Top Information Security Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
