I'm asking, cause i'll be back in the springs soon, and i'm still contemplating on whether or not I want to work at a dealership. There are pros and cons to both dealerships and independent garages. Do you guys typically rely mostly on the dealer for service and routine maintanance (minus warranty work or course) or do you have a regular "guy on the corner"?

Dealer. Independents don't cost that much less anymore.

I don't know any "guy on the corner". Vehicles are more complicated than they were 20 years ago and he probably doesn't have the high tech equipment a dealer does.

You're not tellin me nothin I don't know. I have to deal with that everyday. Most of my tools are diagnostic equipment, costing me over $10,000. But you'd be suprised. I work for an independent garage, and we have more diagnostic equipment than some dealers around here. I should mention that i'm an ASE Master certified automobile technician, with Advanced Level Specialist training. Not to ring my own bell, but there aren't too many techs with my certifications and experience. I've gotten to the point where I can pretty much tell someone what they're gonna pay me, so I do have my pick, and boy, have I got some job offers, mostly in Motor city, but i've worked for dealers before, and they pay differently than independents do.

I use an independent...the Honda dealership is too dang far and the Firestone guys as well as my uncle are really close.

Before, when I lived here from my driving age back in 1985 - 1993 (I moved to Grand Junction and then to Denver for a while) I always used Independent Honda which has since changed it's name. Better service, they loved me and I loved them...You can't hardly get that with a dealership and I have dealt with dealerships in Grand Junction and in Denver.

But yeah, independent as far as I am concerned.

Do you guys have any recomendations? I'd really like to stay with an independent, perhaps maybe a retail chain. I won't work for anyone that isn't serious about driveability work, and getting cars fixed right the first time. I'm a professional, and I take great pride in what I do, so I can't work for an unprofessional shop.

I have used Doug's Japanese Service and Academy Transmission for our older cars. Both provided great results and I would recommend either. We also use Pikes Peak Acura. Their service dept is top notch and they have some nice loaner cars.
Don't know about the employment angle though.

On the topic of auto repair, does anyone listen to Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers on NPR radio on Saturday mornings? Not only are these guys geniuses with cars, they are hilarious.....

They're kinda corny, but they do know their stuff. Both of them are master techs with over 20 years experience
