Just moved into house with large lawn area and have no idea how often and for how long to water my yard. Any suggestions?

I run mine for 15 minutes, each zone, twice a day, three days a week.

I have a sprinkler system, but I only use it once or twice a week, and so far, my grass looks great

Normally, a sprinkler system has several separate "zones" that are controlled separately. Mine has two separate zones that split the front yard, one for the back yard, and one for a drip system for the ornamental bushes around the house. On bigger systems especially, there isn't enough flow capacity in the house water mains to supply all the zones at once, so the controller cycles them one at a time. It also allows you to tailor the amount of water for each area...my front yard, for example, gets a lot more sun in the afternoon, so needs more water than the back, and the drip system needs to runs longer than the other sectors since it trickles the water out slower than a sprinkler head.

I run mine each zone (the two bigger zones - the third zone only 7 minutes as it's a part of the property that keeps water) at 14 minutes, two times (about 6:00 am) on Tuesday and Saturday. I stayed with the drought watering restrictions that we had in 2002.

I don't have the prettiest lawn but it's green and it works for me.

I don't have a sprinkler system. I water with old-fashioned regular hook-up-to the hose water sprinklers, only once a week, maybe twice if the week is particularly hot, but I leave them in place for longer.
