Hi,
We'll be moving to COS this year. I have a child with dyslexia going into the 5th grade. I need a public school teacher who will understand this. So many teachers do not understand dyslexia. Does anyone have any ideas about schools or teachers? We will be renting. I will find a home in a school district that works for my kids. Please help!! Thank you in advance

In ten years on here we've not had a thread on this topic.

Best I can do is steer you posting #2 in this thread that matches zip codes to school districts. It lists the websites for the local districts and you can search their sites or call and talk to them. School year here usually begins in mid-August.

Hopefully some of our school teachers who post here will provide some advice.

Well my son is dyslexic too. But it really has only been realized recently. I think I've always known, but he's diagnosed ADHD and has an IEP. I have struggled with some of his teachers understanding his issues. There is the Hill Spring Academy, HillSprings Learning Center - Homepage but I have not pursued this. I have only had him in public school and his IEP. He is receiving some help now in middle school but elementary school was a struggle. He was attending an after school reading intervention program that followed the Take Flight curriculum. I was very pleased with this and hope he will be able to continue this coming school year, but it all depends on funding and what gets offered.

Thanks so far for posting Mike and Kristie. The zip code list is very helpful.
Kristie, have you looked into Orton Gillingham? I am a tutor, but don't work in the schools. My kid has had some hits and some major misses when it comes to education and dyslexia. She doesn't qualify for an IEP, but does have a 504 plan. It has helped occasionally through the years. I am hoping to find a teacher who knows what dyslexia is, but most importantly a teacher who teaches kinesthetically. I can't afford Hillspring. I've looked into it and the cost is very high. Thanks again and I look forward to any help.

I have looked into Orton Gillingham. Cost is our problem too. We did try a tutor but I wasn't sure it helped much. Maybe it wasn't the right tutor. We are in District 49 and I do think they are doing some things to help kids with reading and learning differently. I know they use Go Noodle which promotes Kinesthetic activity. I really hope they offer another after school program so he can continue the Take Flight curriculum. Best of luck to you.
