Hi all, we just received our notice that my son and I both drew bull elk tags for first season (mid-October) in Unit 50. North West of Florissant.

If anyone has experience hunting this Unit, we would greatly appreciate any help or thoughts...

We will be looking for good camping & hunting spots. (1st season rifle should see less people, but the more desolate the better. We don’t mind putting in the miles.

Any help is greatly appreciated but please PM me!

Thanks so much!
Bryan

A lot of unit 50 covers the northern part of the South Park area. I'd imagine you will be hunting up in the more mountainous areas north of Highways 24 and 9. Access to most of those areas is not too difficult. Terrain can be intermittently steep, but all of it is below timberline. I've regularly seen herds of elk in that area over the years, so success may be possible if they are travelling through when you have your season.

Can't help with camping sites as I've never camped back in there. There is development and home sites in the park and up some of the roads in the area, so I wouldn't consider it highly remote. There is a lot of forest service land in there, but I'd also guess a lot of private land too.

Not sure if you're looking for campgrounds in general, but check out Round Mountain Campground: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/psic...=12878it's

Off 24 near Lake George, in the general vicinity of where you'll be hunting. It's a nice campground I've used for viewing the Perseid Meteor Showers - there's a virtual YouTube tour you can check out.

Or perhaps:

Thanks for responding! We will likely be hunting the “Puma Hills”. In the Pike Nat. Forest up to the Tarryall Reservoir. I am not familiar with the location at all. We will definitely be able to get some spotting since this is a lot closer to home than Steamboat Springs last year.

We will definitely check out Round Mountain campground. I think this was one of the ones we wanted to camp at previously!

Still looking for anyone else with experience in this area either hunting or that lives nearby. Anything is helpful!

Thanks everyone!

Bryan

I hunted that unit for 4 solid days a few years ago and never so much as saw a trace of elk. Gave up, went home and as I'm driving down 24 towards Divide, there's a herd of hundreds just standing mere yards off the side of the road, unable to be touched.

That's the kind of luck I have.

Well that’s not promising :/. What area did you concentrate on? I just received a Mulley tag for that same unit too but for second season...

That's why I say if your timing is right, it could be good, but it could just as easily be off. I've seen a lot of deer and elk in that area, but it tends to be a migratory area and they don't hang out there long for whatever reason.

A side digression on Elk. At Yellowstone National Park visitors keep trying to get up close to baby Elk and keep getting attacked by mama Elk who don't seem to have any sense of humor. Where's David Letterman when we need a new episode of Stupid Human Tricks.

Here's a video of a bull Elk guarding his harem by ramming a pickup truck.

Here's photographer actually butting heads with a young bull Elk.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. That elk was put down because of his familiarity with humans who fed him.
