The official launch of 4G LTE service in Columbus by Verizon Wireless is Thursday.

The company has been preparing for the new service for some time, with tests in the market allowing existing smartphone customers to sample the greater speed.

But it should be available through most of Columbus, Phenix City and in the Smiths Station, Ala., area as of Thursday, the company said today.

The local rollout coincides with the launch of 4G LTE in 32 other markets. That will put the service in 337 markets nationwide, it said.

Verizon said 4G LTE should be up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers who venture into areas where 4G is not available will step down to 3G.

It is about time. Hard to believe it took this long considering the fact we have one of the largest corporate stores in the country here in Columbus.

I've had it for a couple of weeks now, here in Columbus.

I had it for over a year when I was in Atlanta. It's great, but it's a battery killer. I tend to keep my phone on wireless internet access, whenever available to preserve my battery.
