I don't see Columbus as being viable. Macon is closer and has the space for long runways that will need to be built to handle A380's and 787's

Huh? Columbus has plenty of space thank you very much. The airport we have now has handled jets before.

Logistically a second Atlanta airport in Columbus is silly. Why not put the second airport north of the city not south?

Going north has been studied. It just doesn't work. Columbus could gain big time from this.

The DC area has 3 airports and we're only a touch bigger than Atlanta. I could see an airport doing well in northern suburbs. I'm thinking something Forsyth or Cherokee county they have a little more room. This would be mostly used locals while Hartsfield would continue to be used for connecting flights.

Columbus is not an Atlanta suburb. It just doesn't make sense to me.

The following is what has been recommended for the airport to meet what is needed to be Atlanta's 2nd airport

1) Expand the current 7,000ft main runway to 9,000 ft.

2) Expand from the current 8 gates to 20-30 gates along with an expansion of the terminal.

In other news:

1) Taxiway C realignment was won by Robinson Paving. The cost is $3,031,500.

2) 6/24 electrical upgrade was won by TCA Electrical. The new lights will be $795,500.

3) Columbus Airport has sponsored the High Speed Rail Study with a $15,000 contribution.

9000 is not long enough - super jumbos need 11-12000ft

So, where north of Atlanta? Old Dobbins field comes to mind

My guess is the airport would just handle jets like an A320, MD-90, etc. If Columbus does end up being the 2nd airport, I imagine it will serve as an airport much like Midway or Hobby do for Chicago and Houston. Even if it doesn't happen, Columbus needs to push for more airlines, destinations, and larger planes.

They looked at several sites in Paulding County, Briscoe in Lawrenceville, and a few other places. Dobbins is still an active air force base.

It would be great for Columbus considering the fact that many military bases are relocating there as well. It could help the economy in the area for sure.

Midway was an international airport (1923-1931) BEFORE O'Hare and carried the bulk of the flights to the city until 1961 when ORD overtook it. MDW's major drawback - no chance of expansion. It's restricted to 6522ft (Rwys 13-31). It still is the better of the two considering the runway limitation and closer to the city proper.
