Trash Inc., Cancer Clusters & Air/Water/Soil Pollution (Columbus: gated, stats)

Hi sorry for the negatively implied title. I think the greater Columbus area is some of the most beautiful land in the USA.

However, there are some things that concern me. If you have any links regarding these questions I would really appreciate it.

1. CNBC ran a show called Trash Inc. They stated that Ohio buys New York's toxic trash. Where are these trash dumps and do they effect the soil/air/water in the greater Columbus area?

2. What are your thoughts about the recent news clips on the higher than normal cancer rates in children in the Columbus area?

3. What do you think of the air, water, and soil quality? If you jog outside does anyone skip days based on air quality?

I am also interested to know this. We are considering moving to Columbus from Denver and I am finding conflicting info. on the cancer rate. My mom died of cancer so this is an important issue for me. I grew up in western PA and the cancer rate there was very high.

Personally I have not heard of any issues in the Columbus area. If you're still interested, you could probably use Google or Facebook to find environmental organizations in Columbus or central Ohio -- a starting point could be contacting a board member of the local Sierra Club.

I don't think Ohio is especially progressive when it comes to environmental issues, but you never know. There could be work happening behind the scenes.

Of the midwestern states, you might find a more proactive approach in Illinois, and, in Indiana there are a number of organizations who focus on the Indiana Dunes area (near Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Porter.)

As far as cancer clusters, there was one in Clyde, Ohio (northern Ohio near Sandusky) which was investigated. As a rust belt state, there are a lot of towns that once thrived on manufacturing and now have only a toxic legacy left.

I am researching this info. too, as I'm interested in a possible move to Ohio. I did not realize Columbus had a higher occurrence of childhood cancer and would be interested in getting more insight on that as well.

Columbus generally does not have good air quality, but is not in the "worst" categories, if that helps. All these environmental info. is on that website.
