hello i just moved to Columbus from Michigan and so far I love it. this heat is killing me though, i need a place to swim. I like swimming outdoors in a lake or river. are there any spots on the Olentangy that would be okay to swim at? I overheard someone say something about a ropeswing somewhere on the Olentangy but couldn't get the details. Anyone heard of this, or anything similar? or are there any other rivers i could swim in? I've heard alum creek is nice but i don't want to go that far. thanks!

I'm interested to know about this too... anywhere within an hour of Columbus, like an old quarry or anything?

I have heard that Tuttle and the other city swimming pools have a low admission price and they're definitely worth checking out.

The price may have gone up since, but five years ago, the city swimming pools were $5/year+50cents/use. As for the ropeswing, I think it's along the Olentangy River Trail, but I'm not sure where. While swimming in the Olentangy is not the best idea, it's ok as long as the water is deep enough to keep things flowing downstream and you avoid the places where the storm sewers bring water to the river, which are marked.

It's not a good idea to swim in the Olentangy because a lot of its water used to be diverted to a canal and the remnants of that infrastructure could suck potential swimmers underwater.

Neither are the local quarries a good idea. There have been several drownings in them in recent years, including one just a couple of months ago, and they get patrolled pretty regularly. As far as I know, they're all on private property.

Do Ohio (and S. Michigan for that matter) rivers naturally look like sewage drains with murky, painful to look at (not speaking of swimming) waters or it's relatively recent transformation, courtesy of big agro and big cities? My curiosity is triggered by the fact that the plant I frequent used to have more or less naturalized swampy area (before they destroyed it) with crystal clear water, water clarity was so non Ohaoish it made me wonder. Does anyone remember any historical references regarding river water clarity? As for swimming holes, NW Ohio is made of hard to percolate clay. There are plenty of big man made ponds with relatively clear waters and unknown amounts of agrochemicals and water treatment chemicals in it. Just hit US 23 N out of Columbus and you might find something that is worth of further inquiry.
