My husband and I will be relocating to Columbus and since neither of us are from there we are unsure of which area may be the best to live. We don't have kids, so no need to worry about school districts.

Ideally we'd like to live downtown, so we are near restaurants and entertainment. We do have a Labrador, so any place we go they'd need to allow dogs. We've heard mixed reviews about German Town (as it's quaint and cute, but may not be safe after dark). Our main needs are the area needs to be safe and we would like to have some green space for our dog.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The best areas near Downtown would be... Downtown itself, the Arena or Brewery Districts, German Village, Short North (Italian and Victorian Villages), Grandview, Upper Arlington and Clintonville.

German Village is perfectly safe. That is not to say it is crime free, as no place is, but you shouldn't have any serious issues.

Do you know if there are any deals or when is the best place to look for apartments or homes to rent?

In general, most homes are coming on to the market now. Spring is also the biggest buying season.

I'm sure you know about Zillow and Apartment Finder. Those are probably the two best ways to find some rentals.

If I were coming in from out of town and renting, and wanted to be near the "action", I would stick to the Arena District and Short North. If you want something a little more low key but with plenty of restaurants and watering holes, Grandview or South Upper Arlington is the place. You can walk to just about everything if you are so inclined.

German Village is if you wan't a slower pace, though. There really isn't that much going on compared to some other parts of town.

True it's mostly residential, but it's in a pretty central location. If you can't walk to everything, you could bike.

Short north/Vic village. I live in grandview and it is a nice walkable place that is not far from the action.

Ditto to Short north/Victorian village. Near Goodale park. But rents are very high there. Hotpads.com or padmapper.com seemed convenient for searching rentals.

And going up. There are a lot plans for development down there.
