Is there anything comparable to the Kamm's Corner area? We lived there and it's safe, cheap, and fairly close to downtown Cleveland.

Columbus I can't seem to find anything even remotely as cheap in a safe area. What gives?

How about the Westgate neighborhood? It's a nice, older neighborhood with great housing stock, a lot of longtime homeowners, and it's only about 10 or 15 minutes to downtown. There are some rough neighborhoods to the east, but Westgate itself is safe.

Another option would be the Beechwold area, particularly east of High Street. Some nice cape cod starters that are affordable. Definitely safe, walkable, and not too bad of a commute to downtown.

Eastmoor is an option too. It's on the eastern border of Bexley (I think Gould is the street that divides Bexley and Columbus), so you have a lot of the advantages of Bexley, without housing prices or taxes that are as high.

I would would second Eastmoor. Bexley amenities except sidewalks without the taxes and home prices.

Haven't been to that corner of Cleveland myself, but I understand it has a walkable district with numerous local destinations: Westgate and Eastmoor don't, so no they're nothing alike except they have cheaper housing. That much is true. Between the two, the west side of Eastmoor is at least close to Bexley's rather fancy downtown on Main St. Go east or west of that district and you'll see why the city chose not to be annexed by Columbus: it's the opposite of Bexley's portion of Main St: run down, too car-centric, sprawling, ugly, and about the most notable place on the other parts of Main on either side of Bexley is the recycled porn shop on the Eastmoor side. Seriously, that actually exists (or did for a veeeery long time). Westgate is far removed from anyplace remotely walkable, or rather, places you'd want to walk to unless shady corner stores and dodgy bars are your thing: Sullivant Ave has plenty of those.

Old North Columbus may be an option, but you'll want to be east of High St (west might work too, but I think more homeowners are on the east side) if you want a quieter area (since all the bars and restaurants are there) and at least a few blocks worth of a buffer zone north of Lane away from the college undergrads. It's got some unique spots too. Among the plentiful restaurant options (Indian, Korean, Japanese, Ethiopian, higher-end local American, almost 24 hr pizza joint, etc) you've got some small live music venues and even a coffee shop-bar-record store-bookstore.

I'm originally from the Cleveland area and I can tell you right now, the Cleveland housing market and Columbus's are different. Columbus wasn't nearly as hard hit by the recession as Cleveland (or even Cincinnati)...it's the city that people are moving to for more opportunity. Therefore, the prices are going to be higher even for an equivalent house and type of neighborhood as you'd find in Cleveland. So you might just have to reset your expectations on price.

I don't know what your budget is, but the Beechwold area of Clintonville (northern Columbus: 43214 zip but north of Henderson Rd or Morse Rd all the way up to Chase Rd) is a safe neighborhood, close to everything, with older cute homes and lower prices than the rest of Clintonville. That's where we've lived for the past 6 years and it's been great.

You sure seem to be moving to Columbus a lot; especially from Cincinnati and Cleveland and many of your posts indicate you live in Columbus.

Whatever...
