Best combo that still works for me is avast for my anti-virus and malwarebytes to keep all that add and malware in check. I also use cclearner throughout the day to keep things tidy. Also, I run WOT and avast web rep when searching on the Internet, those two have keep me out of trouble a couple of times as well.

You shouldn't have to spend any money on a virus program. Despite what some people say in here, MSE is a hell of a lot better than McAfee...or McCrappy as someone put it.

You should also look in to Malwarebytes. You can get a free version, or you can upgrade to a full version requiring a payment. But it's very good.

Kapersky is another great virus tool. Get their TDSS Killer, too, free of charge.

I also like to use Super Antispyware.

And of course, you can use HitmanPro.

I use all four of those, and I don't pay a penny in virus protection. You can, if you want, but they all still work under the free version.
