Microsoft just announced it, but with minimal details.

First question: What happened to Windows 9?

I'm glad they are using numbers instead of names like Vista. It's simpler.
And we're hoping the UI will be more like 7 and before.

At least it is shaping up to be better for desktops. I don't need a tablet OS on my computer.

If, and that if is key here, Microsoft does follow through with their plan, it almost certainly will be better acclaimed than windows 8/8.1.

From a article in The Oregonian "The company is skipping version 9 to emphasize advances it is making toward a world centered on mobile devices and Internet services."

That's all irrelevant.
reporters just copy and paste from company press releases.

real versions of Windows are not given away by the name but by internal version they are assigned.

windows 8.1 's internal version is 6.3.

my guess is that windows 10 will be either called 6.4 or 7.0. either way the only reason they are calling it ten is because they probably created some study group that suggested the name 10 rolls off the tongue better.

The initial enterprise feature notes looked promising.

Skipping because

Number nine, number nine, number nine...

Or they're just a bunch of idiots. 50/50.
