1) What can expensive tablets do that this inexpensive Fire HD cannot?
2) Can you borrow ebooks from public library or buy books from online and use this Amazon Fire HD as a kindle to read them?
3) Why do people still buy close to $100 kindles, when you can buy an Amazon Fire HD 6 for the same price and use it to surf the web too?
1) More expensive tablets have more memory, faster processors, and higher resolution screens. Android tablets have access to the Google Play store, where Fire Tablets only have access to the Amazon app store.
2) This depends upon your library, but if you can check out to Kindle from your library it will work on the Fire.
3) Having had both, the regular e-ink readers are easier to see in direct sunlight, generally are easier on the eyes, and have battery life that incredibly outlast a regular tablet.
For #3 I'll echo the easier to read, especially if you like reading outdoors. I have done both having a book on my Samsung tablet and on my kindle and have switched when it got dark while a passenger in a car since I have a kindle without light. Reading on the Samsung greatly tired my eyes. Also, when I read I don't want the distraction of email or other internet things that I know I could ignore but ...well I don't. Not to mention battery life. Without wifi on the kindle will last a long while amount of time varies with the amount you read. Anywhere from a week to a month or more. Also, they are generally lighter than a tablet.

For future reference it's also a violation of the TOS to bump your own post, and to crosspost your question to multiple forums.
Skunky pretty much answered your questions. Other than performance, you're also locked out of the Play store on a Fire tablet.

You're so much more diplomatic then me. I wouldn't have been as polite.
Come on people. Don't feed the trolls. Just report the problems. I had to delete 7 posts, one at a time. With no assigned Moderator for Computers, those of us that take an interest have to deal with this sttuf in addition to our assigned forums. Give us a break.
