Of course I just recently purchased one of these.

I have one not on that list. Is it vulnerable too?

The routers are vulnerable to a simple phishing attack, it seems. “By convincing a user to visit a specially crafted web site, a remote unauthenticated attacker may execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on affected routers”

You realize that your computer, email accounts, and any other online services are vulnerable by using the same technique (phishing). Not something I would trash my router over, and it's on the list.

I'm not worried about me, but others in my family are not so smart. I do try to teach them, but ... Well, sometimes nothing I do can stop them.

I check for updates on my router every few months or whenever I read about issue, I recently upgraded it again. In today's world updates are even more important.

Besides updates maybe consider installing https://www.malwarebytes.com/ on their computer, it would not be 100% but would warn of most sites that have malaware.

Netgear just sent me a fix, but I need to plug in a cat5 wire before I can install it. Now where did I put that wire?

No need for that usually. Just log in to the router and use the update page, it can check for and download new firmware.

The instructions are wrong. That more applies if you're feeding the firmware file from a computer. With the method I mentioned the router is doing the downloading, doing it using wireless through the router interface is fine.

Okay, I was reading the steps for a manual download, and this is what it says.

Quote:
To manually upgrade your router’s firmware:
Download the firmware for your router from the NETGEAR Download Center, save it to your desktop, and unzip the file if needed.
Note: The correct firmware file uses an .img or .chk extension.
Using a computer that is connected to your router via an Ethernet cable (wired), launch a web browser from a computer.
Note: Do not use a computer that is connected wirelessly to the router to upload the firmware. A wireless firmware update might corrupt the router’s firmware, rendering it unusable.
Enter Router login.
Enter the router user name and password.
Note: The user name is admin and the default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
Select ADVANCED > Administration.
Click the Firmware Update or Router Update button.
The button label varies by router.
Click Choose File or Browse.
Locate and highlight the saved firmware on your desktop and click Open > Upload.
Note: Do not interrupt this process as it might cause corruption, which will make your router unusable.
Your router reboots after the firmware is uploaded. If your router does not reboot, check the Router Status page to confirm whether the new firmware version uploaded.
And this is the instructions for an automatic download.

Bug Fixes
Fixed the security issue about Security Advisory VU 582384.
To Install
Note: To avoid wireless disconnect issue during the firmware download process, NETGEAR recommends that firmware upgrade be performed on a computer with wired connection.
Write down all the settings which you changed from the default values, since you may need to re-enter them manually.
Using the Download Link below, download and extract the new firmware to a convenient place such as your desktop. The filename after extracting is R6400-V1.0.1.18_1.0.15.chk

Download Link: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/fil....18_1.0.15.zip

Log in to the router using a Web browser. The URL is Router login.
Click ADVANCED tab > Administration > Firmware Upgrade.
Click Browse and find the file you just downloaded.
Click Upload. Do not interrupt the upgrade while the router does this step.
Important Note:
The upgrade process is completed when the on screen progress bar completes. If power LED light turns amber and blinking, power cycle the router to complete the upgrade.
If the upgrade progress bar on web GUI doesn’t display correctly during firmware upgrade, you can still check the status using Power LED. The Power LED should be blinking (amber) during firmware upgrade. After firmware upgrade is done and boots up the system, it changes to steady amber color.
Please DO NOT power off or reboot the device during firmware upgrade, otherwise, it may result to a corrupt firmware and cause the device not to work.
No biggie I found the wire, and will go that route to play it safe.
