I use a top-rated antivirus program that has the initials BD and when I run a scan I notice that it scans about 220,000 files and skips about 50,000. Why does it skip those files on every scan? Thanks for any helpful input?
Not all files are equally likely to contain a virus so and antivirus program can be configured to skip certain file types. What program are you using?
When you say "program" do you mean the manufacturer or the specific program the manufacture has designated for my scan? If the latter, I just run a normal deep file scan, I think it's called. It was set up by the manufacturer when I DL'ed it. I'm illiterate in these things. Sorry.
Does that mean I can configure the scan to check all files?

What is the name of your antivirus software?
Yes, you can usually tell it which types of files to include or exclude during a full scan. Look around in the options.

Normally, to decrease time spent scanning (and using CPU cycles), antivirus software will skip files it deems are not a threat. This includes files like txt files, which are not infectable and cannot be executed to activate a virus.
You can run a manual scan which includes all contents and files, but for routine scheduled scans the default setting of just infectable files should be more than adequate.

Oh, okay. Thought there was rule about not mentioning products. Yes, it's BitDefender. I start a manual scan but it still skips files and strange, it is automatically set to start at 12AM and I cannot find the mechanism that allows me to change the scan time.
Another thing I noticed in this #1-rated product: The icon read "Protected: No threats" but when I ran a scan right then it detected a trojan, which I successfully commanded to eliminate. Maybe successfully. Who can ever be sure about these things
BitDefender products have a Smart Scan module, which prevents re-scanning of unchanged, clean files. This is used to increase scanning speeds in both Realtime and OnDemand scans.
It just means those files were scanned in the past and were clean. If no changes to the file have changed since last scan it skips them.
