Thanks, JayCT. Lifting should be no problem; I just haven't looked at a window unit in >5 years and wasn't sure if we would need special wiring/insulation, etc. I have a good idea of where to start now.

Yes..make sure you know what the outlet is nearby..Is it a 110V or 220V..then you pick your A/C based on that. I dont recommend an extension cord so make sure there's an outlet nearby.

They should sell the foam insulaters which is easy to install, just stuff around the a/c and window or where any gaps are. Look for daylight or fell for outside air.

It is pretty simple. Place the unit in the window. Pull the top sash down to keep it in place. Extend the accordian sides out to close off the opening. Screw in a small bracket to hold the window down. Screw the accordian in place. Stuff any openings with foam. Plug it into the nearest socket, turn it on and you are done.

I have done so many of these for family and friends that I have the process memorized even though it has been years since I have had to do it. It is not hard as long as the unit is small. I did a number of large units and they were bears to deal with. All I can say it thank God for central air. Now I don't have anyone that needs my help. Jay

I agree with Steel7 and Belleislerunner that you should invest in fans. The NYT recently ran an interesting article on choosing fans over air conditioning:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/16/ga...-big-fans.html

Purplesque, you mentioned that you would be installing window units but for rooms without units you should consider putting in fans. They're economical and let you keep your light!

You would find me dead on the floor with my hair blowing in the fan breeze above me if I had fans and not a/c.

It's an icebox in my home right now and fans do not chill the air or drop the humidity down.. Fans are no good with temps over 80 imo.

Looking at my station console..84 outisde at 4:30pm and 68 inside...another 3 degrees lower & I'll be happy.

Our house has no AC, and what's worse, it has off-sized pop-out windows that can't accommodate AC window units. Our home's hallways and room layout would not produce any kind of efficient air conditioning even if we were to get central. We have fans, and we have one of those rolling portable AC things. We use that in my office when it's just too unbearable to breathe (over 95 and humid). We have ceiling fans and a stand-up tower fan that helps get the air circulating but other than that, we live with it.

If you think about it, you really only "need" the AC for a couple of weeks out of the year. So it shouldn't be that big a deal to buy a couple of window units and a tower fan (We got our tower fan for $10 at a yard sale across the street - it was brand new and they were moving and didn't want to pack it).
