OK, I should probably apologize in advance for an ignorant question, but am I correct in assuming the Nutmeg State doesn't actually grow any nutmeg?

No, no. The nickname 'The Nutmeg State' came from the custom, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, of carving little wooden nutmegs by the state inhabitants. I'm not making this up. Nutmeg, REAL nutmeg, is a tropical plant.

I did say it was an ignorant question! Where I come from, we often use nutmeg in our cooking, hence the query from my folks. Thanks for clearing that up...

That story usually goes on to say that the Connecticut traders would sell their carved 'nutmegs' to unknowing buyers as real spices.

We do have some shad grown broadleaf tobacco "plantations" in north central CT. It's used for cigar wrappers and is among the finest.
