Hello! I'm considering moving to the New London area, and am looking at an apartment near the Coast Guard Academy. How safe is the area for a single female? I've been a bit worried with everything I've been reading online, but I'm not clear if there are some parts of the city that might be better than others.

That's not a great neighborhood, on the sketchy side IMO. I would try to keep your search south of the hospital. Much safer.

New London is very small in terms of square miles (under 11 sq miles, almost half of which is water), so you can live south of the hospital, like willow wind suggests, and still have a short commute. Most of New London is filled with decent residential areas, though.

You can also look into nearby Waterford and still be a 10 minute drive away in many parts of Waterford.

welcome to the area.

No particular reason. That's just one of the places I've found an apartment that matches my budget and pet requirements.

My boyfriend currently lives there. He likes it a lot..but as a female there are definitely some streets that I wouldn't (as being a woman) being comfortable walking by myself. New London has a lot of neat little shops, cafes, bars, etc. but there are also parts that are more sketchy or closed down. I think you'd be okay living on your own, but still having some caution.
