I can't really find this information, maybe i'm not using the right keywords or looking at the wrong parts of the dmv website.

I'm looking at a 1990 vehicle, which qualifies for registeration as a "classic" car in CT. What benefits do I get for registering as a classic? I know i'd be limited as far as cannot use it as a daily driver. Anything else? Skip emissions testing? fewer registration renewals? etc?

Thanks

I'm a technician/ VSI inspector here in Virginia and in our state antique plates mean you don't have to get an annual safety inspection on your vehicle. There are certain rules however, the car has to be x amount of years old to be consider a classic/antique vehicle.

It's a little confusing because to me an antique would be a Model T Ford, a classic would be like a 1965 Mustang.

You're actually asking two questions- first what are classic plates and second is what benefit do you get for registering a classic vehicle.

You don't have to get a classic plate for your car. The " classic" plate is simply another form of many
" vanity" plates. You simply pay extra for them.

As far as registration, CT considers a car more than 20 years old a classic car. If the car is more than 25 years old, you won't need to have emissions testing every two years. A 1990 car is 24 years old so you'd have to get it emissions tested .

Other than that there no special privileges that I know of. However, you should check with your local tax assessor . A friend had a nasty shock when her ancient, high mileage Volvo turned 20. She received a vastly inflated tax bill from the town based on the assumption that her car was now a " classic" and a collector's item, according to the assessor.

Sit tight. I'm sure more posters with far more knowledge than me will come along with more info.

In regards to the tax bill, the value of an "antique" vehicle can be assessed at no more than $500 for tax purposes. If you have the classic vehicle plate this is automatic. If you do not have the classic vehicle plate you may have to prove to the assessor that your car qualifies.

ASSESSMENT LIMIT ON ANTIQUE VEHICLES

DMV: Classic Vehicle Plate

My friend said he will be able to get his classic plates on his mustang soon. I said so? He said, well it will be worth more when i sell it.

I have a 1987 Fiero GT which is in very good condition. After reading these comments, I don't see any good reason to register it in CT as a classic car. Agreed?

I looked into it for an old motorcycle I had. Not much of a reason to do it in CT. Some states have much more attractive deals, like permanent registration.

If you're in a high tax town with a high value vehicle (even at 2K), there will be a benefit to getting your assessed value capped at $500.

My 1986 car is assessed at just over $500 so for me, it's not worth dealing with DMV for a few cents.

I thought they were raising the cap to $1000 this year. Did that not go through?
