Hi All,

We have just moved from the UK to Darien. We did not bring any furniture due to relocation costs. We are now buying furniture for all the rooms but due to young children, may not have the time to do the installation. Is there a website, I can find a handyman or somebody who can come to help for assembly please and how much can it costs for this sort of service.

Many thanks
Isha

Unless you go to Ikea, most furniture comes assembled and the furniture store delivery people bring it in and set it in place, including assembling beds and setting the mattresses.....

Echoing Jim, all furniture aside from what you buy from a flat box either through IKEA or Walmart/BJ's/etc. comes delivered and is either fully assembled or is put together by the delivery team in your home and placed where you want it.

If you need help with putting together IKEA or other flat box items you purchase see if your town has a facebook forum group you can join and you will find tons of recommendations for someone who can assist.

There are some websites that you can look up contractors and see how local people like them. Here are two that I have seen TV commercials for.

https://www.angieslist.com

https://www.homeadvisor.com

I found this too. THE BEST LOCAL BUSINESS REVIEW SITES FOR HOME CONTRACTORS. Angie's List and Home Advisor are on it too so that is a good sign.

I would look up any business you are thinking of using on the BBB or the "Better Business Bureau" site also.

Consider that any money you save on a mail order piece of furniture that requires assembly, you waste the savings on paying someone to assemble it for you..... May as well buy something nice at the furniture store.

Keep in mind, if your $20/hr "handyman" shows up in a rotted out vehicle with a broken leaf spring he probably isn't insured. I wouldn't be surprised down that end of the state to see a $100 "show up" charge and the first 30 minutes, plus at least $50/hr after that.... (call a plumber or HVAC company....probably $150/$80).

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy some tools, although some of that unassembled stuff comes with an allen wrench to put them together.... and learn to decypher poorly translated Chinese to English.

I can only comment on Hayneedle. I ordered our wine bar swivel stools from them and it came in two large boxes and I spent about 1.5 hours assembling 4.

If you go to craigslist to find a labor person, be extremely careful and vet that person to the best of your ability.

taskrabbit.com is an Angies List type of listing for people that do things like this.
