I thought I saw a 5G antenna

Anyone else see any in the state? I'd be much more apt to update to a new phone if this is really coming out.

5G is a bit of a misnomer term. There is an actual industry standard for 5G (real name is 5th Generation), but the FCC and other agencies have pretty much allowed the TelComs to advertise 4G LTE+ and other services as 5G, whether or not it meets the strict industry True high-band benchmarks. The problem with true 5th Generation is that it mostly is a mesh network, so there are dozens of transmitter nodes for a community whereas most modern cell service is provided with a couple of towers. The distance issue is a significant problem for the rollout of high band 5G even in dense urban areas.

In short, 5G is here but which 5G is it?

Yep. It would be massively expensive to implement a true 5G network. You have to chop the power and bunch the base stations much closer together to see real bandwidth improvements. With today's tower architecture and spacing, all you can do is use the better modulation, channel width, and parallelism mechanisms. It's better but you're not going to have 300 million people streaming HD video with it.
