Ok, I'm going to be a freshman at SUNY Plattsburgh next fall, and plan on majoring in finace and/or economics and going on to get an M.B.A from Cornell or U of Chicago...

and hopefully landing a job in this field... I know most of the jobs are in NYC and a lot of people do the commute...but are there any jobs like this right in connecticut?

btw im from Albany NY, but my uncle lived in Fairfield and bought a new house in Lordship right on the sound and loves it =)

There are some IB jobs in Stamford and Greenwich. Fairfield County has quite a few hedge funds and some venture capital firms as well. The best IB jobs are in NYC with Goldman Sachs. I recently went through the interview process with a hedge fund in Westport, and it was pretty involved. They wound up forwarding my application to a different department and meanwhile I took a different job.

If you want to go into IB, be prepared for a highly competitive job market. The more ways you can objectively demonstrate your excellence, the better. If majoring in economics, choose a minor or double major in a hard science like physics or chemistry. During the summer before your senior year, apply for internships with the kinds of firms you want to work for, or some related financial firm (small or large). When it comes time to apply, know people on the inside (hopefully you met them during your internship). An MBA probably won't help. Furthermore, people usually don't get into good MBA programs without 2+ years of post-college work experience.

All that said, it sounds like you're planning too far ahead. If you really want to map things out, focus on the next two years at this point -- and execution is the most important part.
