I'm even weirder - I don't own a TV at all.

And I don't watch TV via the internet, either.

You need to take the time to set them up for your particular room, sources, etc. Modern TV's aren't "plug and play" if you really want to get the most out of them.
Exactly. To some extent I'm of a similar mindset when it comes to my computers and smart phone. I've learned probably the bare minimum to make them operate, but they're not optimized.

Yea, I long for the days of 480i pictures and 4-head VCRs.............. not

and EGA (16 color) graphics, 360K floppies, dot-matrix printers and dial-up AOL connections for my computer.

Another reason why secondary channels are typically 480i is because you can only carry so much data on a channel frequency. If you want to carry multiple channels on one frequency, most of them are going to be a lower resolution format than the primary channel carried on the frequency.

My Toshiba 32" crt tv died a couple of months ago. Bought my first 48" Samsung 6350 Not so much for it being 'smart' but because it is 1080, 120+ and has an 'arc' for the a/v receiver 'arc'.
I'm an old movie buff. I've watched 'The Caine Mutiny' Humphrey Bogart, Van Johnson many times in 480 4:3 on the tube. WUSF is a local PBS channel that shows re-mastered classics on Saturday night. A couple of weeks ago, they showed the movie in HD 16:9 on their prime 16-1 channel. It was amazing to see. It was like it was live and you were in the movie. OTA antenna HD is better than DISH HD

Your eyesight must not be very good. Modern TVs are better for watching anything. Regular TV shows, which are high defintion now. Sports - awesome in HD. Movies of course - especially with a reasonable sound system.

Buying new stuff, feeds into the consumerism culture. Throw away the old while it still works and spend more money. I do not like spending money, simply to spend money.

Often it takes time for buffering when we watch stuff. You have to buffer before a show can start, then it will freeze multiple times through a show as it has to do more buffering. Going to HD requires a lot more buffering.

As you spend more your Cost-Of-Living goes up. I retired relatively young, on one pension. My family does okay on this level of income. If we want to bump up our COL, we would need to first increase our income.

I could increase my spending and watch movie theater quality in my home, but I choose not to increase my COL.

As for the buffering that requires, ugh. I really do not want to.
