Hi everyone.
I am looking for an easy way to tape tv & watch a show.
I don't want to get the Dvr w/cox.
I have a smart tv & a non- blue Ray DVD player. I think I am looking
For TiVo or roku box. I'm not an apple person, I have heard about apple
TV but since owning an iPhone I'm not crazy about apple prducts.

Thanks. I have a coupon @ dell which is close to expiration.

A Tivo = a DVR and that's your best bet.

A TiVo = monthly payment. I think he's looking to do it without a monthly payment or he'd just get the Cox Box.

Why are you against getting a DVR box? That is easily the best and most convenient way to do what you are looking to do. Any other solutions are probably going to cost more to setup equipment and time wise than what a few years of DVR rental fees would cost.

You can copy shows on a DVD-R/VCR combo unit. Can record/play CD/DVD and record/watch all your old tapes. Also 'dub' tapes to DVD.

No HD.
Likely unable to watch something not being recorded.
May still need a service for the program guide.
May need an external tuner (cable box) if the recorder does not have an appropriate digital tuner.
Dub VHS to DVD? Why?
Can only record one program at a time.

I may be missing some other issues, but I was making these arguments several years ago, and cable DVRs have improved even since then.

Thanks for the replies
I am trying to rely as little as possible on the cable
Companies as I don't watch much tv. Would love
To just pick a couple of shows & watch, for example,
While having dinner.
I have reduced channel selection w/cox which is fine.
Really for 10/mo within a year you could buy
Something & subscribe to Netflix or something
Else. I'm just not sure which is the best choice.
I upgraded to a smart tv in sept & want to take
Advantage of it.

From this forum I heard about mr. Antennae
He was great but I can't make use of ota
As I live in the bottom of a 2 level condo.
He said I needed minimally a south facing patio
Mine is east (a little so east).

I was thinking maybe recording is too much of I don't
Want to pay extra $10-20/mo & may be satisfied
W/ Netflix Hulu.

Was advised to ask @ best buy but I hate to go
To a salesperson to ask this type if question.
Really it boils down to my dislike of being hostage
To cable co I'm thinking there isn't much choice.

Best bet is one of these:

DVR Plus - Subscription Free TV Antenna DVR | channelmasterstore.com

No fees, but it only does OTA via an antenna. It does have a free guide though and can save and record by show name.

If you have a computer, I think there's a little gizmo you can get to hook up to your cable TV that then hooks up to the computer that you can use to record programs on your computer's hard drive if you also have the right software.
