First piece of advice: Do not buy an Ipod - worst MP3 player in the world. They don't play WMA; you need Itunes (piece of junk, about as user friendly as a rattlesnake; totally unintuitive), very difficult to move music around from device to computer A to computer B - with Windows you are stuck with the library on that machine....the list goes on. Ipods are a huge marketing gimmick.
Stick with a standard MP3 player. I have had good luck with Creative Zen. I have purchased three of them at Wal-Mart. A standard MP3 player appears to windows as a hard drive, no rights management, no restrictions on libraries. Just plug it in an move WMA and MP3 on and off effortlessly. Easy to downsample to fit more songs.
I saw 2GB for $20, 4GB for $27, free shipping. Those may be off brands so maybe find a name brand. Also, make sure it has a screen and consider what kind of screen is visible in sunlight.

Philips should be okay, though Coby may be a little too cheap. I got a cheap one before and the battery didn't stay connected, I had to put some tape in there to keep it tight. I like the kinds that are the size of a USB flash drive and have a small display. The one I have now also has a normal USB jack, just like a flash drive, so it's easy to use (don't have to remember any cable).
So I would say a safe bet is a Philips or Sony, flash drive size player. Like these:

DO NOT get tangled up in the Pirate Bay nonsense. the owners of this site were recently sued, tried, and CONVICTED of copyright infringement in Sweden just a few months ago
