What's the recreation situation in and around Cookeville?
Or maybe better yet, are there parks, bike paths, places to hike, etc, in and around Cookeville?

I'm coming down to do some recon in September. One of my 'pretty much have to have' are these opportunities for outdoor recreation.

TN Rail Trail and Cane Creek park are both good for walks and biking. If you want to hike in the woods there are numerous places near Cookeville to do that and several waterfalls to see.

Yes, there are many, many options for outdoor recreation. Within 45 minutes or so of town there are over 1000 miles of lakeshore, a dozen state parks, a national recreation area, and over 150 waterfalls. In town there are miles of paved bike trails as Sycamore21 said as well as unpaved trails for mountain biking. Rafting and kayaking in the area are wildly popular in addition to hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. The state refers to Cookeville as Tennessee's "Waterfall Oasis."

As for the paved bike/walking trail that runs through town, it currently connects downtown Cookeville to downtown Algood (4 miles), and it's being extended beyond downtown Algood just up the mountain. The city is in the process of figuring out the engineering to also extend it west to connect with the paved trails that already exist at Cane Creek Park and Cane Creek Lake and then to the western edge of the county. Once completed (who knows when that will be) it will be over 30 miles long.

One unpaved city trail that just opened is a "book trail" in Capshaw Park (adjacent to Capshaw Elementary School downtown) where there are stops along the trail with short books to read.
