This is an interesting article done on Jamestown, TN by the BBC. Please, no political discussion. I just wanted to share what was being shown to the world.

"Why work, when you've got free money?" says it all.

This article could have described anywhere in Appalachia, or much of rural American for that matter. The disdain for government held by the people whose very survival depends on the government just baffles me. The textbook example of cognitive dissonance.

Tennessee is really a tale of two worlds in where the urban areas are seeing steady growth with an incredible economic engine in the Nashville metro coupled with stagnation and decline in the rural areas and small towns. It's a trend that's being seen across the country.

It seems they have written this story to make it seem more dreary and desperate than it is. Why in the world is BBC doing a piece on Jamestown, TN. I also find it funny they only showed run down trailers and not some of the nice fancy new houses, new school, parks in the area (Big South Fork, Pickett State Park, Frozen Head, St. Alvin C. York historic Park) wineries, the near by St. York and equestrian facilities.

Jamestown/Fentress county has historically been made up of poor, rural communities with no industry except coal and its not likely Jamestown will ever be a industrial hub, it is just too far out. These small rural communities have always been stagnant for the most part and growth has always been seen in the major cities near the waterways and interstates.

Jobs far a few between, most people farmed, worked in the mines years ago, own businesses or commute to the nearest town, Crossville, not 2 hours away but about 30-45 minutes. The entire area here is religious compared to many areas. We also have a fairly large Mennonite community in the Jamestown/Fentress/Overton Co. area. I'm not sure why people see these communities as such a bad thing. Not all areas are urban and small towns are typically not Mayberry RFD.

Granted I have not been in Jamestown for several years so the town may be more deserted and rundown than the last time I was there.
I'm really not sure what Trump has to do with any of it except TN is pretty near 100% red. These poor rural communities are no different than slum areas of metro communities where many are on disability and government assistance.
