A Brazilian ceramics company is expected to bring 220 jobs to Baxter.
Portobello SA's plans to build its U.S. headquarters as well as its first U.S. production facility were announced Monday morning at DelMonaco Winery with public officials including Tennessee Department of Economic Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and Cesar Gomes, chair of the board of directors for Portobello America.
Portobello is expected to build its first U.S. operation on the Tennessee Motor Speedway site in Putnam County by 2021.
“Portobello’s decision to locate its new production facility and U.S. headquarters and create more than 200 jobs in Baxter will be transformational for the community,” Gov. Bill Haslam said. “In Tennessee, we have created a business-friendly environment that promotes growth in all of our communities across the state and I appreciate Portobello for seeing what great assets Tennessee and Putnam County have to offer. I look forward to seeing this company succeed in our state and with investments like this, Tennessee will lead in the creation of high-quality jobs.”
Cesar Gomes, chair of the board of directors for Portobello American, said, “I appreciate Brazil-based Portobello for selecting Tennessee as the home of its first U.S. production facility and its new U.S. headquarters.
"Tennessee places a major emphasis on foreign direct investment and Brazilian companies have been a great investment partners in Tennessee," Gomes continued. "There are 13 Brazilian companies currently located in our state, employing approximately 2,000 Tennesseans. I thank Portobello for making this major announcement in Baxter and for creating 220 new high quality, family-wage jobs in Putnam County.”

Very cool! I guess now we can look back and say it's a good thing the county didn't buy that old raceway property for a new fairground. And while not mentioned in the press conference and press release, I assume TDOT is going to have to improve Exit 280 as part of this. Ditty Road is certainly going to have to be widened.

On this week's radio show on 94.1 with Ben Rodgers, who's a county government consultant with the state and is also a county commissioner for Putnam County representing Baxter, Rodgers had Baxter's mayor as his guest to talk about all the growth taking place in Baxter. The mayor specifically mentioned that Portobello was originally going to build its $150 million Baxter plant in 4 phases, but as of last week Portobello purchased an additional 50 acres and announced it's going to go ahead and build it all at once. The plant will be 1.3 million square feet. To put that in perspective, Opry Mills Mall in Nashville is 1.2 million square feet.

In the new strip mall on Jefferson that houses Sweet Boba Café, T-Mobile, and Walls of Books, one of the storefronts is being built out and says "Portobello North America" on the door. I think that's a good sign that this project is about to get going.

It seems like it's taken forever because of covid, but they're about to get started on extending sewer and water services to the site of the new ceramics factory in Baxter. Portobello has already started the hiring process for its North American headquarters which will be part of the Baxter facility.
