I've seen a lot of articles on how to "get around the NSA spy programs" by using encryption of longer, more difficult passwords. But honestly, an Ars Technica report claims that they've invented a new cryptography breaking algorithm that could be based on quantum annealing or perhaps actual quantum computing to break it. A quantum computer could easily crack 128-bit encryption. And by storing a copy of the traffic that flows through the Internet hubs (think AT&T, Amazon, etc) they could easily store it and crunch on it using pattern recognition software, keywords, money transactions, etc. It'd be pretty easy ... by mapping the traffic of the internet they could connect known spokes of terrorists to their hubs and use network theory to identify more important nodes. My money would be on financial transactions ... follow the money ... as they always say.

I feel like one of the math challenged FBI agents on Numb3rs listening to Charlie as he explains how he need more data points so his algorithm could predict Don's next bowl movement.
Mathematicians are from Mars and the rest of us are from Tulsa, which is why I wanted to wait to see what the program was that the "scandal was all about" and having looked at just this little bit I doubt that the most outrage have a clue as to what they are being outraged about. Which is a problem in itself for both the outraged and the outragers.
This kind of data organization is much easier to read through then a google search. Google mind mapping software and you'll see something nearly the same. But every country is spying on each other. Not really big news here.
Look up Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Big Data. It's mainly a massive database built for size/speed and built to slice and dice/interrelate the data. Many corporations have them these days. Not so much for spying, but for tracking data, reporting, marketing, trending, customer accounts, etc. It's an entire specialty within IT.
