I'm sure you are right about that..However at this point we don't even know who is/will be in control. Those planes could be used against Egyptian citizens or Isreal. It just seems like the wrong time to be giving weapons to a government in turmoil.

The Israelis would be elated if those planes were used against them. Such could serve as a pretext to start another war in accordance with Project for a New American Century.
The article makes clear that Washington does follow the news:
Quote:
“At this point, we don't know where Egypt is headed," Rep. Mac Thornberry, (R-Texas), vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told FoxNews.com at the time. "We should be cautious about driving them away, but we should also be cautious about the arms we provide.”
If there comes a time when such arms shouldn't be provided, then either the White House or Congress, or both, will act.

Not really as Israelis have no wish to see their own citizens killed.
That (plus great lobbyists padding the pockets of politicians) but also the fact that if we don't send the military equipment to Egypt, then Russia or China will.
This. And that's all there is to it. The mighty dollar takes priority over all rhyme or reason.
And hell, it's not like they are giving them free gas, missiles and support crews to go with them. Those birds may never even be airborne if the country collapses. From what I understand the care and feeding of a fighter jet is a bit more complicated then say a case of AKs and RPGs.
Yup....we need Egypt because we perceive that we need Israel (or they have weaseled their way into the hearts of Washington--mostly through their wallets--and led us to believe that without Israel we lose the Mideast oil), but that is a conversation for another day.
Now we are in a mess. They guy we put our money in Egypt just got bounced. So much for spreading Democracy. Now we have to deal with the Army, and what better way to appease them and 'encourage' them to call another democratic election than to (ahem...) bribe them with a few airplanes?
Politics is ugly. International politics is even uglier.
