So incredibly sad for all involved.

Bat boy dies after being hit at National Baseball Congress World Series

Quote:
A 9-year-old bat boy has died after he was accidentally hit in the head with a bat during a National Baseball Congress World Series game in Kansas.

The boy was struck by a follow-through swing near the on-deck circle during the second inning of the team's game on Saturday afternoon. A spokesman for the National Baseball Congress, which is made up of amateur and semi-professional teams, says the child was wearing a helmet, which is mandatory.

My brother was hit in the head with a baseball bat at my older brother's little legue game. He was 3 at the time. He was knocked out and needed stitches but recovered. This is sad.

Horrible accident, but that's all it is.

I would agree that there needs to be a minimum age to be a bat boy, but 9 years old is old enough to do it. Perhaps a minimum age of 7 or 8..

I keep thinking back to the.. '02 World Series, I believe.. Dusty Baker had his 3 year old son as the bat boy.. And this happened.

As someone who is very involved with youth baseball this was a horrible tragedy that hit close to home. I cannot imagine what the player who swung that bat must be going through. A tragic accident for all involved.

PS The team is from Liberal, Kansas hence the first part of the name. The second part, I am not sure of where they got "Bee Jay's" from, but the team has been around since 1955 with the same exact name. They're a powerhouse in the summer semipro collegiate leagues.

Simple answer, outlaw bat boys! Those guys make enough money, instead of a slave wage child they can just hire a local wino to be their bat boy, and if he gets beaned in the head and dies its no big deal.
