With the election of new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, it's no longer a question if Canada will legalize cannabis, but how soon it will happen.

"Canada’s current system of marijuana prohibition does not work. It does not prevent young people from using marijuana and too many Canadians end up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug," the party's position statement says. "To ensure that we keep marijuana out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals, we will legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana."

Canada's new governing party promises to legalize, regulate marijuana sales

Onward!

The USA could learn a thing or two from Canada on this issue. I think the legalization of cannabis will spark the conversation in the United States like never before. According to a documentary I saw a while back Canada would have already legalized if it wasn't for the U.S. drug czar under George w. Bush threatening to tighten up the border like we do with Mexico. So they did not go through with it. In modern times, though, I think Canada can do it and should do it.

I saw this on World News Tonight. Gpod for them! I can only hope we can be as enlightened one day, but I am heartened by what appears to be steady progress in the increasing withdraw of troops from this particular unwinnable and pointless 'war'

I thought it was legal in The Netherlands? I am probably wrong though, I know it definitely legal in Nigeria, or maybe it is illegal and no one cares.

I know an ex policeman who years ago thought it should be legalized simply because the police have better things to do. It and other drugs are legal in Portugal.

Decriminalization, yes … "Legalization," however … I have mixed feelings …

BTW, I tried MaryJane a few decades back -- some REALY good sh*t … Unlike William Jefferson "Slick Willie" Clinton, I did inhale and I muchly enjoyed it … "Oh, WOW, man … !!!"

But … I can see where some people get into genuine life difficulty … Mary Jane is very appealing on several levels, but I think she's a ******* best not visited on a regular basis ...

I have a feeling that it's legalization here isn't going to go through because of our trade relationship with the U.S. It's funny how the U.S government officials are threatening to "tighten borders" if Marijuana is legalized in Canada yet "they" legalized it in four states in their own country...

Either way I don't like it very much. It gave me panic attacks as a teenager every time I used and worsened my asthma. Never had the attacks when I wasn't smoking it. And they say the stuff has health benefits? Not for me. But I believe adults should have access to it just as they do alcohol. It's at their discretion, not the government.
