A Dallas County jury found a father not guilty Tuesday of theft for taking away his daughter’s cell phone as punishment.
Ronald Jackson, 36, was charged with theft of property of at least $50 but under $500, a Class B misdemeanor.
Dallas County Criminal Court Judge Lisa Green ordered the jury to find Jackson not guilty after ruling the state failed to present sufficient evidence to continue the case.
Jackson said he took his 12-year-old daughter’s cell phone as punishment after finding inappropriate texts in September 2013. A few hours later, officers from the Grand Prairie Police Department showed up at his front door, asking for the iPhone 4 back.
I can see where the dad is coming from. Him and baby mama are not working together in the best interest of the child. He took a disciplinary action that he felt was in the best interest of the child. Instead of working with him and discussing it, baby mama calls the police. I wouldn't want to deal with with her either. The child is probably going to be pitted against him time and time again. He decides to step away rather than being taken to court for every little thing. Baby mama is probably poisoning the child against him.
This is an example of why some men won't step in to be he dad the kids need. To baby mama, he is just a paycheck.
What the 12 year old needed was a good spanking for calling the cops.
Opps...my fault. The mother needed a good spanking after this quote.
"You can't take someone's property, regardless if you're a parent or not," Steppe said.
Wow!
I can't believe that this happened. I can't imagine that Dad received a ticket, went to jail and had a trial. I am glad that he got off.
I wonder who bought the cell phone in the first place and I wonder who was paying the cell phone bill? I certainly do not think that it was the 12 year old daughter. And, even if she did buy the phone and was paying the monthly changes (which is extremely, extremely unlikely) IMHO a parent still has the right to take away the phone if she was sending inappropriate messages.
Most people struggle to get the police to care about a theft, nice to see the full force of the criminal justice system so willing to jump into this one.

Oops, I missed the sentence that said that the mom bought the phone and paid for the cell plan. In that case, it should have been the mother who took the phone away. But, I still think that dad should have some say, such as not allowing the daughter to use the phone during his visitation time, if she sent inappropriate messages.
