Heard this piece on NPR today. Fellow did not show up for work for six years. His absence was noted when he was due to be awarded for his total twenty years of excellent service!

Spanish civil servant off work unnoticed for six years - BBC News

Reads like something from an episode of Yes, Minister.

Years ago, I briefly worked the night shift at a Little Store (a convenience store, was one of a few dozen owned by a regional company. When I quit, I kept receiving paychecks. What was really bizarre was that I wasn't salary - I punched a timecard. So I have no idea how they were managing to screw up and keep trying to pay me.

No, I didn't cash them (can't say I wasn't tempted, though). I returned the first one, and then two more came, which I simply tore up.

Well, taxes were undoubtedly taken out of the money that I never earned, yes. So the company duly set X amount of my pay aside and sent it off to the SSA, the feds, and the state of Wisconsin. Since I invariably set my withholdings back then so I'd get a return at the end of the year, it probably just added a few bucks to my tax refund. Maybe if it bumped me into a higher bracket, it was all a wash. But it certainly didn't cost me anything.

I think a lot of people show up at work everyday and do little or nothing their entire career.
