I can't believe all the people are bashing this idea. Oh wait, I can. I'm betting the people bashing it are the same ones who have their eyes glued to their phones the entire time they are supposedly eating out with their "family." There have been countless times I've seen a group of friends go out, a dating couple, or family eat out together, and you wouldn't even know they're together except for the fact that they're sitting at the same table. They're so addicted to those stupid phones they can't take their eyes off them. The saddest situations I've seen are the times many moms are out with their toddlers. The toddlers want their mom's attention, and reach for her or talk to her, and she's so busy looking at her phone she ignores him/her the majority of the time they're at the restaurant. As for the challenge, my wife and I don't need it, because we detach from our phones when we're out together already. We don't need a dangling carrot offered by a restaurant, because we already have the most precious incentive in the world: keeping our marriage strong and happy by focusing our attention on each other.
I totally agree with your post. Phones get left in the car when we go out. I dont see the point of going out then staying isolated with your phone.
Leave it to CD to bash a harmless idea and bring up religion.
It's a simple idea with a reward if you choose to participate. If you don't want to participate continue to be glued to your phone while you stuff your face and no ill consequences will be suffered as a result of this promo.
What's next they will give away freedom fries for bringing a Bible and reading it with your family.
Why don't they just limit themselves to sell food? Who do they think they are to tell their customers what they should be doing or not while they eat their greasy food?
Both eating there and temporarily giving up your cell phone are voluntary. Nobody is telling anybody what they can and can't do.
Lest you think I am not of this century, I have an iPhone and a family. I quite frankly find it the height of rudeness to be speaking to a friend and dining out and have them pick up their phone to see who sent the latest text. If, there is a health issue or problem, of course, I understand but I really don't enjoy the attached at the hip to the phone set.

Frankly, I'm tired of the phone shaming. I'm an adult and pay my own phone bill. I'll decide when I will and won't use it, and it's no one else's business whether or not it's appropriate (as long as it's not causing anyone else physical harm, or has the potential to).

The offer is optional. Nobody is telling you what to do. If you want to talk on your phone and dine nobody is saying you can't. Hence the term optional.

Sure it is when your cell phone habit affects others. Its like saying Im tired of smoke shaming. Im and adult and pay for my own ciggs so I will decide when and where I will smoke whether its appropriate or not.
I was at the polls the other day and two people in front of me in line were playing on their phone. They both held up the line the time it took for the poll worker to get their attention and them put their phone up to move up to vote. Numerous times people hold up the flow because they are yakking on their phone ignoring the cashier/waitress or whatever.
Frankly I'm tired of peoples lack of respect and manners and ignorance of common courtesy.

You realize nobody is forcing you to eat there? Free market. They can try this and see if it increases or decreases sales. Those who want to eat there do, those who don't will not. It's a beautiful thing, this free-market economy.
A Chick-fil-A operator in Georgia wants to stop families from being distracted by their phones while sharing a meal together. So he came up with the "Cell Phone Coop," a box in which family members place their (silenced) phones while they're eating in a Chick-fil-A restaurant, and he came up with a pretty good incentive to convince them to do so: free ice cream.
LOL Those darn Christians. Always trying to make people bend to their rules, even if they have to give out freebies.
I'll should out a Hail Mary in the middle of the restaurant for a free shake!
