Call it a freak of nature: Lightning struck a tree in a pasture in East Texas and electrocuted 19 head of cattle, witnesses told KLTV 7 in Tyler.

The cows had sought refuge from a storm Sunday night under the tree on land north of Hallsville in Harrison County between Longview and Marshall.

“All of a sudden, a lightning bolt came down and the cows just fell, in the blink of an eye,” witness Victor Benson told KLTV. “And it was over.”

Wow; first the 300 reindeer in Norway & now this.

I have an almost phobic fear of lightning & I get upset because everyone laughs at me (husband & kids). I always find it interesting that animals usually KNOW when a storm is coming.

That hour before a storm comes is the only time I can go outside & pull weeds because I'm allergic to wasp/bee stings. They KNOW when danger is coming & they are GONE (if it wasn't for the fact that we get thunderstorms every afternoon here my house would probably resemble Sleeping Beauty's castle).

I guess if you are a cow/deer there isn't anywhere to "go" & since the majority of fatal lightning strikes happen #1; open feilds & #2; under trees; they are scr***d.

It's not a particularly ridiculous fear. If you are close enough to hear thunder, in theory you could be struck, though the odds are low. We had a patient that suffered an electrocution injury. It wasn't pretty. I like lightning storms, but I go inside if they get too close.

Poor cows. They weren't going to have a pleasant ending though anyway.

I think part of a hot cow on a plate is a great way for them to end.

Yes, I am sure you would like to end up cooked on a plate too, right?
