A 90-year-old woman’s death this week is the first alligator-related fatality in state history, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
Bonnie Walker was reported missing Wednesday morning from Brookdale Charleston, the West Ashley assisted-living facility where she was a resident. Her body was found in a retention pond behind the property a few hours later.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office ruled her death accidental. The cause was “multiple sharp and blunt force injuries” consistent with those made by an alligator.
RIP. Im sure she got confused and fell in.....Why have alligators in a pond next tot a nursing home anyways?
I agree. What was the alligator doing in the retention pond? Did the police divers dive into the pond before or after they learned about the gator? Is foul play a possibility...not from staff necessarily, but from a resident or visitor to the grounds?
An alligator was there because thats where they live, in and around water. I live in a 'up scale' gated community of around 6,000 people near the cost of NC. There are many ponds in the community, many that are landscaped, some stocked with fish etc but their primary purpose it to provide some place for ground water to run off during rain etc. Many are interconnected through underground pipes and they eventually empty into wetland marshes that go to the ocean. There is one not 200 feet from my home and occasionally an alligator shows up there. I have seen alligators in a number of the local ponds in and around the golf courses. They are not as plentiful as FL but they are in the area. There is one lake less than an hour away, I have ridden a bike around, and I counted seeing 30+ gators during the ride, some just sunning on the side of the road.
So .... what was a gator doing there? Its where they live. Thats like asking why bird nests are in trees. There have been some reports of gators along the coast in southern VA which is probably the extent of their range in the summer. Down around the NC, SC line they are apt to be seen year round.

Too many questions not being asked or answered.
Never spent any time in the South? You don't tell alligators where to live.
Are alligators like great white sharks in terms of taking a bite and deciding we don't taste good? The last couple of alligator stories indicated that a person's remains were found.

Honest question, no snark intended.
Gators will twist off a leg or arm or ... with a death roll. If the object is small enough they'll swallow it whole.
