The manager at a Staples store assumed that because a customer had a large stomach, she was stealing. She called the police, and when they questioned the customer, it was discovered that she was pregnant with twins.

It goes without saying, hopefully this manager is fired immediately, but this shows what kind of society we have become too, people are always ready to call police at the slightest concern.
Before this craziness, the manager would have kicked the person out of the store if they suspected shoplifting and thats where it would have ended.
I don't know if people read the article but the article indicates the manager was terminated, the customer was refunded, and staples apologized to the customer. These actions occured without delay.
Most corporate chain stores don't accuse you of stealing anything anymore, they leave the policing to the police. They are more of "evidence collectors" than anything. Even loss prevention managers, those who have the job of loss prevention are going to refer to the authorities when there's theft involved. I knew a loss prevention guy at Walmart who put his hand on a shoplifter's shoulder, she sued Walmart and he was fired. He put his hand on her shoulder as if to say, hold it right there a moment while I question you, that kind of a motion, and Walmart settled that case out of court.

If the manager can't tell the difference between someone hiding something underneath their clothes, and a pregnant woman, then there's a big problem somewhere.

You can’t just kick someone out of the store because they’re pregnant. The profiling still would’ve been a problem.

This is true, but the manager couldn't tell she was pregnant, and assumed that she was hiding stolen items underneath her blouse. She told the police that she was 34 weeks pregnant with twins, and had to show them her stomach for them to believe her.
