It's a start. My wishlist from 'The Boring Company' would be a deep bore hyper speed tunnel that would connect east-central MA to lower New York state allowing a very rapid connection of the Boston metro to the NYC metro and points beyond. Present day the cluster**** known as Connecticut gets in the way.
Its a good start indeed. The whole concept is useful for fast travel. I recall a tunnel was proposed for Trans Atlantic travel also. NY to London in an hour or something like that.
But yes, yes, as a resident I referred to it as FOSONE. The Fly-Over State Of New England. Thank heavens there's a great NY deli halfway across.
There are places in the mid-Atlantic region I'd love to explore by car trip and honestly at this point in time I would happily go around Connecticut but one of Elon's tunnels that dove right under Connecticut and bypassed that whole mess would be really nice!
P.S. You are spot on calling CT the fly over state of New England.

The idea is nearly two hundred years old and depends now, as it always has, on the cost-effectiveness of boring tunnels. It's possible that Mr. Minisubmarine Expert has perfected a high-speed borer that can actually progress through all the different type of strata in, say, central California alone. It's also possible that the other fifty issues will gobsmack him the way the ones in auto manufacture have.
Keep in mind that the entire NYC subway system, much of which runs above ground, is only 245 miles long or roughly 2 miles per year of existence... and the whopping eight miles of the Second Ave tunnel has taken decades to finish. While it's not quite an apples to apples comparison, the idea that TBC can get a tunnel from LA to even the Bay Area in less than a decade is probably unicorn territory. And when completed, some finite number of fairly well-off people will be able to zip back and forth quickly... yay.
I will have nothing to do with a tunnel in an area prone to earthquakes. Not going to happen.

We manage to make skyscrapers safe during earthquakes. So I think the same could be said going the other direction.
