When do you break down and get one? Do they really make that much of a difference?

Yes, they will provided.......
you can ride for an extended period of time in a deep bend

you can stand to carry your upper body weight on you shoulders and elbows for a long time

your body mass is almost all muscle with little to no fat at your waist.

If you do time trials or triathlons. And then if you get a tri or TT bike, the come standard. They are not for group riding.

Only If you do time trials or triathlons. They are not for group riding. We don't even allow their use on our club rides.

Nothing says "Fred" like anyone using aero bars who is not actively participating in a time trial or triathlon. Will give slack for a day or two before an event to slap them on your bike for practice. Even my friends who were professional triathletes only put on aero bars for doing events, not to train.

To answer your question, they do help. Forces you to keep your body in an aero position. But being at your absolute minimum weight will help more. Also for doing time trials the ability to push a big gear for extended periods of time helps more as well. But when everything is said and done, for someone who is in shape aero bars will shave about two minutes off your 25 mile TT time (standard distance for time trial events in cycling).
