At Camp Hood, we lived in converted WWII frame barracks buildings which were very flimsy. No insulation in either place. We had small tabletop oscillating fans - I'd point mine right at my bed to sleep comfortably all night.

When riding around in the car on local trips, Mom kept wet washcloths for each of us to cool off with. On one long trip to California, my Dad rented an evaporative cooler that hooked on to the top of the front passenger side door to blow "cool" air in at the top of the window,

We survived ok.
Well thanks for the history lesson grandpa, but I think my comment was pretty obviously tongue-in-cheek.

I know on my maternal grandfather's side I'm something like 6th generation Texan.

I love all the responses about keeping it in the 80s... the temperature in my place of residence when I AM there tends to be 82-87.

Your place must be way better insulated than mine. I try to keep it at 75. It's somewhat comfortable but it still gets plenty warm. I'd never have it at 75 if I had people over. When people are over, I'm talking 68-70 just to make it a respectable temp. Doesn't help that I have two huge windows that face west...even with blackout curtains, no go.
