We have 2 young kids and I'm concerned about these 3 cutouts in the upstairs recreation room. If one of them were to climb and lean over, they could fall to the tiled first floor. We were thinking about adding a decorative railing (about a foot high) in each.

Would a local stairs/railing company do this? Any recommendations?

That's not going to look very good IMO. I think a better solution would be to have glass installed in them, though obviously more costly.

You could buy 3 very nice quality baby gates and install them; that way when you go to sell the house or when kids get older they would be easily removed

Or you might buy a door shield and silicone it in for easy future removal. http://www.petsmart.com/dog/gates/ca...pfm%3Dcategory

Good Suggestion. Something small.
