Hello all

TxDMV - New to Texas
When I look at this Texas DMV website it mentions:

In Texas, you must show you have insurance coverage for a minimum of $30,000 per injured person, up to a total of $60,000 for everyone injured in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage.

While I assume I have that much coverage since I am fully insured through State Farm in California...would it be wise (or is it possible) to switch to a more local insurance before going through with the registration/plate changes?

Thanks

State Farm is here as well, they just switch your local agent to one who is here. Seamless transition after you notify them of your new address.

I went through the process about 9 months ago. I ended up switching companies altogether as I found that rates are better in Texas than they were in Mississippi.

One thing that caught me off-guard was that even though I had provided my new Texas address to the insurance company, since the car was still registered in MS and my driver's license was still a MS license, the insurance company re-issued me MS insurance cards so I called them and told them I intended to register the car in TX and they issued me a TX insurance card.

I'm not sure that having a TX insurance card is necessary to inspect and register the vehicle, but I didn't want to take any chances. Hope this helps.

It is necessary to inspect the vehicle and to obtain/renew a TX drivers license.

I just went through the process myself. As long as you meet the coverage requirements, an out of state insurance should be okay for inspection and registration. I had AAA in MN. When I informed them that I had moved to Texas, they had to cancel my insurance there and I had to go through the local AAA office. It was very easy though. I'd highly recommend AAA Insurance, they came out to be much cheaper than some of the other big ones.

Make sure you go to the Texas DMV website and look at the required information. Multiple ID forms are needed.

I recently moved to Texas from Southern California and I bought a new car in Texas and was told by my California State Farm agent that I would only be covered in Texas for 15 days and that I would have to get a Texas policy written by a local agent b4 the end of the 15 days, so I went to a local State Farm agent and that is what I did. The cost of insuring my old car and my new car with the same coverage, 100/300, $500 ded, was slightly cheaper than what I was paying to insure just my old car in CA. I haven't registered my old car in Texas yet, I'm going to do that next week, but I think you do need proof of Texas insurance for at least 30/60.
