Hello everybody.

We relocated here in McKinney, TX from Brazil 6 months ago. I've got wife and two kids. My oldest is 7 years old and is attending the 1st grade here in US. He is having very hard time to learn English and his progress is above the average as per the latest Indicator of Progress (ISIP) I've got yesterday. My wife and I are very concerned once our son is a very shy kid. I avoid to speak English to him once I don't want him to learn my very bad accent. He can talk few words but not good enough to make him confident.

I've noticed that when he is with any other Brazilian, even adults, he just doesn't even try to speak English. However when he is with other school's children or american kids, he tries to communicate and looks like he can understand some words and context.

I'm afraid that can become an obstacle for his development and could push him backward instead of improve his development and learning process.

So I'm looking for a personal tutor/teacher here in North Texas area to have a one-to-one class twice a week and do appreciate any help and advice.

Thank you in advance and have y'all a great weekend. Maybe a cold one

just have him watch Tv and interact he will get it
I came to this country around 8 with not a lick of English.. TV and just interaction with english speaking people got me there in a year or so. Speak English to him, it will force him to answer in English, he will not pick up the accent don't' worry

Websites like wyzant.com and even care.com allow you to advertise for a bilingual Portuguese/English tutor. Enter your criteria and people will apply. You can choose who you think is most qualified.

Your son's school might be able to help with finding someone too.

Your son is still very young, he'll do great! Perhaps you can take him to the library... they have children's books on tape that he can follow along which will help boost his fluency. You can download 'phonics apps' or picture dictionary apps on your phone/tablet.

Good luck
