This happened fairly close to where OP is looking ... although not a trend indicator and isolated IMO

There are few small pockets of 75074 that I personally would worry about... other than that East or Central Plano offer some of the best bargains considering what all the city has to offer, and it's relative proximity to Dallas.

Well, there is no denying there is a bad pocket on east side but this one sure is wrong example. Those were educated and civil folks, anyone anywhere can go mentally ill, get drunk and find a gun. Gun lobby would still keep saying guns don't kill people.

Notice what was said of this incident:

Quote:
Plano officials described the shooting as "unprecedented" and as something beyond anything they thought they ever would have to respond to. Rushin asked for patience in the investigation as the size of the crime scene and nature of the investigation is unlike anything the department has seen.

Thank you for the informative reply, Shelbelle. I wrote my OP while still out of state and home searching via Google maps and its street-view capabilities. When we got here though, Park Forrest was one of the first places we visited and it was beautiful! It is in the top 5 neighborhoods on our wish list.

Those crime maps are the simple results of complaints and police responses. The tolerance for any sort of crime is a lot lower in places like Plano (either side) than in places where there is real crime. People are more likely to call and police are more likely to respond vigorously. That makes it seem like more crime on a statistical map than there really is.

Thank you for your replies also, Mr. Kirk. I spent a lot of time scanning those crime maps before writing my OP from out of state. Now that we have landed in DFW and toured a lot of the suburbs along the 75 I feel a little silly for worrying so much about crime. I do think the statistics are a little skewed; police departments in each area might release information in different ways.

I would take the dog out walking at night and felt completely safe. If I could have gotten one of the few people who still owned 2-3 acre undeveloped lots to sell them to me 5 years ago, I would still be there.

Also, Spring Creek and Alma isn't even true East Plano and should be even safer. I define East Plano as east of 75.

The area south of Haggard Park is probably the least safe in all of Plano but the police HQ is right there too. I still wouldn't call it unsafe. I feel safer than there than when I return to the part of Garland I grew up in. Also, that area is in the middle of a lot of redevelopment.

I don't trust your maps. There is no way any part of Plano can compare to South Dallas for crime.
Thank you for your post, speedyg, we finally landed in DFW about a month after I wrote this and are now motivated to look for houses around both the Springcreek/Alma area and the actual East side of Plano as well. We love all of these trees and creeks around here, and the neighborhoods that we have looked at have all seemed safe, even the more run-down ones. We've finally settled in a little so I hope to find out more from you all soon!

Here is my list areas in DFW to avoid. It's not meant to be comprehensive:

1. South Dallas/Fair Park: Anything near MLK Blvd and Malcolm X Blvd. South of Downtown/Interstate 30.
2. Pleasant Grove: The grove is anything but pleasant.
3. Vickery Meadow: One of the worst neighborhoods in Dallas north of Downtown.
Thank you for the quick list, it is helpful to have in mind - we did go through Vickery Meadow (I think...we were taking Greenville north as an alternative to the 75, and were heading north of Mockingbird for a while...). It seems like an odd place but isn't it near Lake Highlands, which is supposed to be very family friendly?

Vickery Meadow isn't really dangerous to be honest. It's just an area with a lot of immigrants and generally lower income people. The real danger spots in Dallas is like Woodrow area, Fair Park, Bonton, Highland Hills, Roseland Projects, The Bottoms, and most of Pleasant Grove (minus that one gated community lol).

Throwing this out there. Five Points in Vickery Meadow is still iffy, but not as iffy as ten or so years ago when you would literally see drug deals and prostitutes in clear daylight. Part of Vickery Meadow near Royal Oaks is gentrifying. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on one's views. The new apartments going up in that area are not geared towards lower income folks but rather upwardly income couples and young families.

Believe me, I am against gentrification in all areas of the city, but even ten years ago Five Points didn't even compare to the blight that the majority of Oak Cliff, OED and South Dallas are going through.
