In speaking to friends and family, sounds like Alcuin isn't what it used to be...we liked it for early childhood and the early grades but aren't too sure about the IB program.

As far as I know, Alcuin has always been focused on early childhood as a favorite spot for parents hoping to transfer to the top private schools in preK, K, or 1st. When we toured (years ago) they still weren't offering high school or even talking about it, though I'm sure that they'd already been laying the plans for it. They even told us on the tour that many families who stay through elementary prefer to leave for middle school because of sports, larger school size, curriculum, etc and they wanted to address it. If they haven't fully perfected the IB program in middle and high school, that doesn't seem to indicate that the school isn't what it used to be - simply that it hasn't yet become what they want it to be at the upper grade levels.

Do the CATS folks release their scores on a rolling basis or is there a specific date?

They are released on a rolling basis, although the CATS website says they release them more quickly as the deadlines approach for submitting information to the schools.

Agreed - they release on a rolling basis. We received our results in a little over a week when we went through the process a few years ago.

I have two friends who started at Alcuin for pre-K, kindergarten...both pulled their kids after K.
One of them is a teacher - didn't care for their approach to reading or lack of individualizing curriculum for the more advanced kids.

Question about the AABL testing.....is it typical that the adult administering the exam gives scores to students? This seemed a little strange to me, but was grateful not to have to wait on the results! Also, how much does this actually matter in the process? It would seem less valid than the CATS, but not sure how the private’s view them!

Question about a final email to the admissions folks about interest etc once all the testing has been done and the applications completed...is it customary to email your top choice and tell them exactly that. Does it make any difference?

I'm not sure whether it helped or not, but we sent a handwritten thank you to the admissions team member who interviewed us. With the amount of emails these people get on a daily basis, we figured we'd abstain from piling on in that regard. In the thank you note, we expressed how much we enjoyed our visit and how much we appreciated their consideration of our family. FWIW, we got in, but I doubt it was due to the note !

IMHO, I don't think there is anything wrong with sending an email - we just felt like the person who received it might feel more pressured to reply (thus creating additional work), whereas you can just trash a handwritten note without worrying that a reply is necessary.

You should definitely do it, but it's probably not going to influence the decision one way or the other. At this stage you do everything you can, right? Lucky socks, stay away from ladders, etc. Best of luck, this is a very stressful process!
