Uptown/Downtown would probably be an easier commute. If you are looking for something long-term, the DART Orange Line from downtown Dallas to Las Colinas will open December 2011.

NW Hwy to 114 isn't horrible, but there IS traffic on it. It has lots of stoplights, and the traffic backs up at the Tollway in peak times. There is also a lot of reconstruction going on at Harry Hines for the DART Rail. I'd allow 45 minutes each way to be safe.

Las Colinas itself can be pretty nice. There are beautiful loft-style apartents in the main part of Las Colinas (by the canal) that have several restaurants and shops within walking distance.

There are plenty of very nice apartments around Las Colinas - a step of from "the VIllage." Is there any reason that you really need to live in the Village? I have lived there a couple of times - The Chase and The Park. While the management really does take care of you, and the location is a 'center' of Dallas, I would only consider living there if I really needed to end my week days there. ie proximaty to the White Rock Lake (avid cyclist) or other week night activities you might have in North Dallas or Downtown. For just weekends, I would rather live in Las Colinas, there is plenty to do close by during the week. Drive times from Las Colinas on the Weekends is painless. But I hate commuting, so I schedule my driving around the commuting times.

Well I wouldn't say I 'need' to live in the village, however from what I've been told and read online it does seem to 'tick all the boxes' - nice apartments, good recreation options and the plenty of socialising opportunities. I like the idea of the onsite country club as this seems to provide good recreation and social opportunities right on the doorstep.

You are the target audience. It used to be just singles, but by law, it can't exclude families anymore. Years ago it had a 9-hole golf course right in the middle, where The Lakes Apartments are now, which backed up to the clubhouse. I did use the main club house for its pool and weight room. I did enjoy living there. I lived there twice, living in Mesquite between the two times. I could ride to the lake in under 10 minutes. If you are a cyclist, that is the mecca in the city. The central location of The Village made it convenient to go just about any place I wanted. At one time I had to commute to Arlington, right by the ball park - that was a real pain, especially if there was an afternoon game. Your commute will not be that bad.
Stay away from the apartments that are along Northwest Highway - that's the north side of the community. It is a little too close to gangland located across Northwest Highway, to the north. Ah yes, I remember hearing the gunshots my first week, good times, good times. Those were also the older apartments at the time. However, they have been demo-ed and are the real nice ones now. I lived in the center area and also next to Lovers Lane. Now, those apartments are the "old" ones.
I lived there through the summer of 2004.
One thing I learned, almost everybody that lived in apartments in Dallas through their 20s and 30s and even 40's has probably lived at the Village, one time or another.

I don't actually know anything about it but there is a huge new (one or two years old) development on the north side of Las Colinas called La Villita. I live in the general vicinity and have been by it/through it.
