Hi:
I am new to Dallas, wish I wasn't as I have found the Rental Management people here very RUDE! Yes I have a credit issue due to my ex using my SSN but I am the one paying for it. These Wanna Be's here are very sad individuals, they JUDGE everyone that walks into their office or community. Come on you little snips, one day this just might happen to you and when it does, GOOD LUCK!!! I pay my bills, I work hard, and I am 59, the only crazy reason I moved to this very large snooty city is to be closer to my grandchildren. I lived in Seagrove Beach FL. where there are many rich people, but they don't judge anyone, and are alot nicer that the people here in Dallas. I know you are going to tell me to move back, well let me ask you this: Would you leave your Grandchildren. If you have any compassion or love you would understand. I am just sick and tired of losing money to these management people to run my credit. I have a letter from the State Attorneys Office in FL. for the proof!!! So advise me anyone as where to go for help.
Thank you.
Wyjack

My first suggestion would be to get a copy of your credit report and take it with you. Let them know up front what problems you are facing. Most management companie here are pretty large so personal attention is a foreign concept. Try the smaller a smaller complex or duplex in the which the owner will be making the decision not the management company. Craiglist and the local paper should be able to give you some leads. Good luck to your.

I would try to lease from an individual - that way you have a chance to explain the situation you're in.

Well, before you pay to have them run your credit, tell them what is going on and ask how much that will count against you as far as getting a lease. If they say it's going to be a big problem, then don't let them run a credit check and be out that money for nothing. And btw....it's like that in every city that uses credit checks for apartments, not just the Dallas area....

you need to clean your credit history up whether it is for current problems or future ones--it won't go away--having a letter frm the FL attorney general is not the best way to cure this problem--you need to clean it up with the credit agencies--there are places in this area that can help with that

From the SS admin page:
What if an identity thief is creating credit problems for you?
If someone has misused your Social Security number or other personal information to create credit or other problems for you, Social Security cannot resolve these problems. You should contact the Federal Trade Commission for help.

You can contact the Federal Trade Commission by:

Internet— Deter. Detect. Defend. Avoid ID Theft
Telephone— 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338)
TTY— 1-866-653-4261
You also should monitor your credit report periodically. Free credit reports are available online at www.annualcreditreport.com.

You can even apply for a NEW SS number if your id has been compromised--there is info on same site about how to do that but you can't do it if YOU were the one to cause the problems...
Identity Theft And Your Social Security Number

this is another web site with info about dealing with SSN theft
Identity Theft Victims Guide

if what you say is the case, have you filed charges against your ex for doing that?
do you have proof that you have filed charges--since I doubt it would be taken seriously if you were not able to provide proof to the agency you took it to...

Identity Theft Resource Center Fact Sheet 115 When you personallyknow the identity thief

notice what that site has to say about people who have their SSN taken/misused by those they know...

frankly I don't know why you are surprised at what is happening--unless you have never tried to obtain a credit card/loan or apply for a job where you would have your credit checked (and most are doing that now) since this first happened...
no one except your family here knows you--why would they automatically take your word for something like this...and it could be pretty easy to forge a letter from the Attorney General's office--I have no clue what one would look like...
