Its become a tradition in our family to have tamales at the Christmas Eve gathering. In the past, I worked and there was always someone taking orders from their mama's kitchen. Yum! But for the past several years we just go somewhere local and buy them (since I live in Irving, there are several places south of Union Bower to buy them).

However, I am looking for recommendations from this group to find really, really yummy tamales in the DFW area. I'm willing to drive quite a distance! Suggestions?

I like Luna's Tortilla Factory, the pork and jalapeno. Central market has some great vegetarian tamales.

Second on Luna's Temales. I was doing an environmental assessment on the location next to Woodall Rogers by downtown, before they sold the building. I think I gained 10 pounds during the assessment process.

La Popular is often voted best tamales - I got four dozen from them on Monday. Columbia at Munger - but you had better call ahead. Then again, sometimes they are so busy they can't answer the phone.

I like La Popular because I'm vegetarian and their tamales are truly veg while Luna's have lard in their spinach tamales. La Popular had some special holiday flavors - maybe sweet potato and black eyed pea. You can also pick up from their Farmer's Market location in Shed 2.

I'm a big fan of Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory. They are on Lower Greenville but have other locations throughout the city.
